Reiki-Assisted Therapy Sessions
Reiki is a healing technique where energy is channeled in specific ways to promote healing and well-being. While a traditional Reiki session often times is more meditative and silent (similar to a massage appointment), Reiki-assisted therapy is much more interactive between the client and therapist.
What is Reiki therapy used for?
Reiki-assisted therapy is when Reiki energy is brought into a psychotherapy session to support therapeutic work already happening. Emotions, experiences, and trauma can get stuck in the human energy field (the energy space in and around your physical body), and this can impact your mental health, emotional health, physical health, and nervous system.
Reiki uses life force energy to move that stuck energy and shift it out of the energy field. It’s meant to shine light on energy imbalances, and promote healing within the mind, body, and soul.
Does Reiki work for anxiety?
Oftentimes when someone is experiencing anxiety, there is a lot of unpleasant and uncomfortable energy that is future-focused, mostly happening in the over-thinking brain. Reiki brings the focus back into the present, and supports energy in re-balancing throughout the whole self and not just the brain.
With support from Reiki, clients are able to reconnect their thinking brains and feeling bodies in the present moment, and this helps them reconnect with their intuition and Wise Mind. This can help clients to feel more confident in their decision making, and feel like their decisions and actions are more aligned with their truest self or highest good.
Clients also can find that Reiki brings to light stuck spots, and through the Reiki-assisted therapy activities clients can explore and clarify with the support from their therapist what is needed to get unstuck.
What does a Reiki-assisted therapy session look like?
During Reiki-assisted therapy, Reiki energy is used to support clients in a variety of ways. Dr. Richard Curtin Jr’s work identified the 5 Tasks of Psychotherapeutic Reiki:
Practicing Presence: Reiki brings the client and therapist into the present moment, how the mind and body are experiencing the present moment rather than what may happen in the future. This is also where the client and therapist set the intention of the Reiki-assisted therapy work, and begin to increase awareness of the internal experiences within the client’s mind, body, heart, and soul.
Exploring and Connecting the Mind and Body: Reiki is used to actively explore thoughts, emotions, anxiety symptoms, and bodily experiences. Reiki can also be used here to shine light on the relationship of the mind with those thoughts, emotions, anxiety symptoms, and bodily experiences. If the mind is really grasping tightly onto a thought or emotion, that will change what it looks like to effectively change it.
Heartfulness and Self-Compassion: Reiki and self-compassion exercises are used together to shift clients from the fight-vs-flight nervous system to the rest-and-digest nervous system. Exercises here are focused on bringing loving energy to the heart, and then from the heart to other spots in the body or mind that could benefit from softening.
Releasing and Clearing Energy Blocks: Combining Reiki with breathwork, yoga, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to release and move stuck energy in the body.
Installing Corrective Experiences: Reiki promotes healing intentions through affirmations, reframing unhelpful thoughts into healthy coping thoughts, shifting story focuses to the successful outcomes, and highlighting positive feelings that promote healing and overall wellbeing.
These tasks can all be done in one session (once or multiple times), or can be broken up and done over the course of several sessions. The tasks can also take up an entire session, or be used for just a portion of the session when paired with other therapeutic techniques. There is a lot of flexibility, and Kimberleigh works with clients to find the right pace of the Reiki-assisted therapy work to address each client’s needs effectively.
Additionally, all 5 of the tasks can be done with distance Reiki which allows Kimberleigh to send the Reiki energy to clients using online therapy for anxiety in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Illinois.
Do clients need to be attuned themselves for Reiki-assisted therapy?
No! As an attuned Reiki Master, Kimberleigh is able to facilitate the flow of Reiki energy, even with online therapy! Clients who are attuned are welcome to channel Reiki on their end as well.
Kimberleigh is able to attune clients for self-healing which allows clients to be able to access Reiki for themselves outside of and in between sessions. This self-healing attunement is not the same as Reiki Level 1 attunement, so there is no certification or extra charge.
