Holistic Therapy for anxiety

If you’re an overthinker or perfectionist, you know anxiety it not just an endless mental loop. It’s a full mind-body experience.

With holistic therapy, we don’t just treat your anxiety from the neck up. We look at the data your body is sending, the patterns your mind is replaying, and the deeper alignment of your energy and spirit.

What does holistic approach mean in therapy?

Holistic therapy offers support to you as a whole person, focusing on the mind-body-soul and helping you to develop a stronger connection and understanding of your inner self. While traditional talk therapy can target the “mind” part of that triad, holistic treatment for anxiety also touches on the body and soul parts as well so you can experience healing on all levels.

Mindfully Balanced Therapy uses modern psychotherapy to handle to cognitive scripts of anxiety, somatic practices like yoga and breathwork to act as a manual override for a hyper-vigilant nervous system, and energetic and intuitive work with Reiki and tarot to bring your intuition in to aligning your mind-body-soul.

MIND

Therapy focusing on the MIND will lean into more traditional talk therapies including Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You’ll also learn Mindfulness techniques that help you to “turn the lights on” in your brain to better see and understand yourself! This work is very brain focused, targeting your thoughts and behaviors.

BODY

Since the mind and body are in constant communication, we want to support the BODY in healing too. Working with the body in therapy includes noticing where and how the body experiences emotions, using breathing and gentle movements like yoga to support the body in healing, and ensuring your body is receiving the care it needs with sleep, nutrients, and movement. When additional support is needed, I can provide referrals to amazing dietitians, acupuncturists, and personal trainers to help!

SOUL

Therapy for the soul means different things to different people, and step 1 of this is exploring what it means for you. For some, it’s tapping into and creating more space for the things that give you the “warm and fuzzies” in your heart, your values. You’ll explore what those things are, and find sustainable ways to incorporate them more into your daily life.

For others, it’s tapping into spiritual practices that harness a stronger sense of intuition and inner knowing. If you have spiritual practices already established, you’ll explore ways to use that established strength to cope with anxiety and daily stress. Reiki and intuitive tarot are also used here to support the clearing of stagnant emotional energy from the spirit and reconnecting with your intuition.

So what does holistic therapy actually look like?

You don't need to coordinate between a traditional psychotherapist, a yoga teacher, and an energy healer. By blending these modalities into a singular container, your healing is seamless, targeted, and hyper-efficient.

You might benefit from this integrated holistic approach if…

  • You can logically analyze exactly why you’re anxious, but your body still feels like it’s in a state of panic.

  • You are successful on paper, but your feel an underlying sense of spiritual emptiness.

  • You find yourself intellectualizing your feelings in therapy rather than actually processing and releasing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be flexible or good at yoga?

No! Yoga in therapy is all about connecting with emotions in the body and supporting the nervous system in relaxation. It’s not about deepening your forward fold or getting into advanced handstands. As a yoga teacher, Kimberleigh is able to support you in modifying poses however your body needs, and showing you alternatives that may feel better for you.

Do I need to have a yoga mat or props?

No. The yoga practices done in therapy can be done in a chair, standing, or on the floor with or without a mat. If you have a mat and props at home that you’d like to use in virtual sessions, great! If props could help support relaxation in a pose and you don’t have them in virtual sessions, Kimberleigh can give suggestions of common household items you can use instead. If you see Kimberleigh in-person in Matthews, NC, there are mats and props available for you to use in the office.

Is Tarot fortune-telling?

No. In therapy we do not ask the cards “should I quit my job?” or “will my partner break-up with me?” Instead we use more open ended prompts and use the symbols and images on the cards to tap into deeper self-reflection.

Do I need to know what the cards actually mean?

No. In the therapeutic activities with the cards, the focus is on the imagery and symbolism of the cards which can vary deck to deck. If you have a guidebook for your deck, you’re welcome to reference it after sessions but it is not necessary for the activities

How does Reiki work over virtual sessions?

Reiki is the channeling of universal life force energy (a specific Japanese technique) and moves through space and time instantaneously. A Reiki practitioner is able to provide Reiki from a distance and it is just effective as hands-on Reiki.

Additional Holistic therapy approaches offered by Mindfully Balanced TherapY

While some traditional talk therapies are utilized, additional holistic techniques are incorporated in including:

Mindfulness

Mindfulness at it’s core is all about being present in the moment. Paying attention, in a particular way, in purpose. While meditation is a part of mindfulness, not all mindfulness is meditation. In fact, you can be full of energy or working on your to-do list and still be mindful. Kimberleigh will teach you strategies for practicing mindfulness, including what to do to practice it and specific skills for practicing more effectively. With mindful awareness being necessary for many other coping skills, you’ll learn what you need for mindfulness to become a more natural way of being for you.

Values integration

When is the last time you sat down and clarified your values? Clearly defined what are the things in life that bring you meaning, purpose, and joy? Kimberleigh will help you identify what your values are, prioritize the most important to you, and help you explore ways to incorporate them more into your daily life.

EFT Tapping for Anxiety

The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT Tapping, uses gentle acupressure on meridian points in the upper body to stimulate healing in the body. It’s a combination of Chinese medicine and emotion regulation that helps the body communicate with the brain and reduce the intensity of negative emotions you may be feeling. EFT tapping for anxiety involves tapping on those specific points while describing the type of anxiety you’re feeling in the moment. Kimberleigh offers EFT tapping in sessions and helps you build confidence in using it on your own outside of sessions too for continued benefit.
